THE PRISON PROCESS
(Process of a TDCJ Offender)
MUNICIPLE COUNTY JAIL
As soon as an offender is convicted by a jury he or she officially
becomes property of the state. Sheriffs of the municipal county jail
then schedule the inmate for transfer to a State Correctional Institution.
This process usually takes about 2 weeks.
TDCJ TRANSFER FACILITY
Sheriffs Deputies then transport the convicted prisoner to one of
a few Texas Transfer Facilities, depending in which region the offender
is convicted in. Transfer Facilities include the Middleton Unit, Garza
East Unit, Garza West Unit, Cotulla Unit, San Saba Unit, Tulia Unit,
Ware Unit, Marlin Unit, Holliday Unit, Goodman Unit, and Gurney Unit.
The offender receives an HIV / Hepatitis test and remains in the transfer
facility until his or her intake documents arrive from the Huntsville
Classification Division. This procedure may take up to 6 months.
TDCJ DIAGNOSTICS UNIT
Once Huntsville’s Classification Division receives the inmate’s paper
work, the offender is transferred to the states Diagnostics unit in
Huntsville. There the inmate is interviewed by TDCJ’s Gang Intelligence
officers and classified to a housing unit. The inmate is then transferred
to that unit within a week.
TDCJ HOUSING UNITS
The offender is then transferred to his or her assigned housing unit.
There are over 100 housing units in the state of Texas. Officials
decide if an inmate will be sent to a Minimum/Medium Security Facility
or a Maximum Security Unit. Minimum/Medium Security Facilities are
usually reserved for less violent offenders while the states Maximum
Security Units are designed to house high risk offenders.
PRE RELEASE UNITS
After a prisoner has served his or her time, the offender is transferred
to a Pre Release Unit. These units usually provide beneficial programs
such as Alcohol, Narcotics and Anger management classes. Offenders
generally stay in these units for a few months.
TDCJ WALLS RELEASE UNIT
Female offenders are transported to the Murray Release Unit while
the male offenders are sent to the Huntsville Release Unit in Huntsville,
Texas. There the offender is issued clothing, a Social Security Card,
a 100 dollar check and a bus ticket. The offender is then released
back into society.
