PRISON GANG STRUCTURE

Prison Gangs

Gang intelligence officers have learned a lot about the organization structures of most violent prison gangs. Years of intercepted gang letters, investigations and statements from ex-gang leaders has helped officers understand how prison gangs operate.

A PYRAMID OF RANKS

Major prison gangs like the Mexican Mafia, Texas Syndicate and Aryan Brotherhood have very similar organized gang structures. Prison gangs such as the ones mentioned tend to use a paramilitary chain of command similiar to that of Correctional Officers and the military. Both prison gangs and Correctional Officers operate off a pyramid of Majors, Captains, Lieutenants, Sergeants, and foot soldiers.

PRISON GANGS AND NICCOLO MACHIAVELLI

Prison gangs are now more involved in high intensity drug trafficking and other forms of organized crime. Prison gangs still operate under a paramilitary structure but are now including the scandalous philosophy of Niccolo Machiavelli. Books such as The Prince, The 48 Laws of Power and The Art of War have helped prison gangs transform into highly organized criminal enterprises.

More and more cases about prison gangs working with powerful drug cartels are surfacing. Many prisons now ban the books mentioned and books like them.

The Prison Process

Inmates are interviewed by TDCJ’s Gang Intelligence officers and classified to a housing unit.
